Rosacea

Rosacea Subtypes / Facial Redness / Couperose

What It Is

A chronic inflammatory skin condition characterised by facial redness, flushing, visible blood vessels (telangiectasia), and in some cases, papules and pustules resembling acne. Four main subtypes: ETR (erythematotelangiectatic — redness/flushing), PPR (papulopustular — acne-like), phymatous (skin thickening, usually nose), and ocular (eye irritation). Triggers include UV, temperature extremes, alcohol, spicy foods, certain skincare ingredients (fragrance, alcohol, high-acid exfoliants), and stress.

Key Context

Skincare for rosacea focuses on barrier reinforcement and anti-inflammatory actives: azelaic acid (gold standard), niacinamide, centella asiatica, PHAs (instead of AHAs), ectoin, and mineral SPF only. Avoid: fragrance, high-strength acids, hot water, harsh cleansers.
