Skin Dehydration

Dehydrated Skin / Dehydrated vs Dry Skin

What It Is

A temporary skin condition (not a skin type) characterised by a lack of water in the stratum corneum — distinct from dry skin, which is a skin type characterised by a deficiency in lipids. Any skin type — including oily skin — can become dehydrated. Causes include environmental factors (cold, wind, air conditioning, heating), excessive caffeine/alcohol consumption, inadequate water intake, and over-exfoliation. Signs include tight, dull skin, increased fine line appearance, and a "comfortable" feeling only immediately after moisturiser.

Key Context

Dehydrated skin responds rapidly to humectant-rich serums (hyaluronic acid, glycerine, sodium PCA) applied to damp skin. Dry skin additionally needs replenishment of lipids (ceramides, fatty acids, occlusives). The fix is different depending on which you have.
