What It Is

Astaxanthin is a deep-red carotenoid from the microalga Haematococcus pluvialis, and it is the best-studied antioxidant of the beauty-from-within group. Taken by mouth it is absorbed with dietary fat and distributes into skin, where it quenches the free radicals that drive photoaging and helps defend the collagen and elastin that keep skin springy. A 2021 meta-analysis of small human trials found modest but real gains in skin elasticity and hydration over roughly eight to sixteen weeks, though the same evidence showed no meaningful change in wrinkle depth. Its lab antioxidant capacity is often quoted as many times that of vitamin C, but test-tube potency does not translate one-to-one to visible results, so this is a supportive adjunct rather than a headline anti-ager. The usual studied dose is 4 to 12mg a day, taken with a fatty meal because it is fat-soluble and poorly absorbed on an empty stomach. Well tolerated at these doses, with a harmless reddish tint to the skin possible at the high end, and never a substitute for daily sunscreen.

How to Use

Oral 4 to 12mg a day, taken with a fatty meal for absorption since astaxanthin is fat-soluble and barely absorbed on an empty stomach. Most trials run eight to sixteen weeks before judging results. Stacks naturally with oral vitamin C and E and with collagen for an elasticity-focused from-within routine. Well tolerated; a faint reddish skin tint is possible at higher doses and fades on stopping. Not a replacement for topical antioxidants or daily SPF, which remain the front line.
