Oral Glucosylceramides / Wheat–Rice–Konjac Ceramides / Ceramosides
Plant-derived ceramide precursors (glucosylceramides) from wheat, rice, konjac or beet, taken by mouth to support the skin barrier from within — once digested, they supply building blocks the skin can reassemble into its own ceramides. Several randomised, placebo-controlled trials, mostly of branded wheat extracts, report modest gains in hydration and drops in transepidermal water loss over 4–8 weeks (Guillou 2011; Bizot 2017; Kern 2024), with weaker, emerging signals on elasticity and fine lines. The catch: trials are short, small, and largely funded by the ingredient's makers, and the benefit fades once you stop. A modest, well-tolerated hydration support — not a replacement for a good topical moisturiser.
Oral ~30–350mg/day depending on source and concentration, taken with a meal. Effect builds over 4–8 weeks and fades after stopping. Wheat forms are usually gluten-free lipid extracts; rice or konjac are alternatives if you're cautious.
