What It Is

A xanthophyll carotenoid from the microalga Haematococcus pluvialis, and one of the most potent antioxidants studied for skin — it spans the full width of the cell membrane, giving it broad reach against lipid peroxidation. Its in-vitro antioxidant capacity is often quoted as many times that of vitamin C, but test-tube potency does not translate proportionally to skin results. In humans, small trials and a 2021 meta-analysis link oral astaxanthin to modest gains in skin elasticity and moisture, with no significant effect on wrinkle depth. Used topically (0.02–0.1%) and orally (4–12mg/day) as a support antioxidant — real but modest, and no replacement for daily sunscreen.

Typical Effective Concentration

0.02–0.1%

This concentration sits at or below the 1% line — that's expected and effective for this ingredient. Below the 1% line isn't automatically fairy-dusting; some ingredients genuinely work at low doses.

How to Use

Topical 0.02–0.1% in serums, AM and/or PM. Oral 4–12mg/day for systemic photoprotection and anti-aging benefits.
