What It Is

Zinc taken by mouth is one of the better-evidenced supplements for inflammatory acne. It works from the inside as an anti-inflammatory and mild androgen-calmer: it quiets the immune over-reaction around C. acnes, settles the redness and swelling of inflamed spots, and modestly dials down the androgen-driven oiliness that feeds breakouts. Several randomised trials and a meta-analysis find that oral zinc lowers inflammatory lesion counts, with the clearest benefit in mild-to-moderate inflammatory acne rather than stubborn comedonal or cystic disease. It is best read as a supportive adjunct — meaningful, low-cost, and handy when topical or oral antibiotics are being spared — but rarely a standalone fix. The usual therapeutic range is roughly 30 to 45mg of elemental zinc a day, taken with food to blunt the nausea that is its most common side effect. The caution that matters most: sustained high-dose zinc quietly depletes copper, so longer courses are kept time-limited or balanced with a little copper, and it is spaced apart from certain antibiotics and iron it can bind.

How to Use

Over-the-counter, unlike prescription options — but treat the dose with respect. Trials typically use 30 to 45mg of elemental zinc daily (as gluconate, sulfate or picolinate), taken with food to reduce nausea, and reviewed after about twelve weeks. Keep higher doses time-limited: sustained intake above roughly 40mg a day can deplete copper, so extended use is either capped or paired with a small amount of copper. Space it a couple of hours apart from certain antibiotics, iron and calcium, which compete with it for absorption. Not a substitute for a full acne routine — it sits alongside topical actives and daily sunscreen.
