Sealant / TEWL Reducer / Barrier Sealant
An ingredient that forms a physical film on the skin surface to slow transepidermal water loss (TEWL) by creating a hydrophobic barrier. Occlusives are the most effective short-term moisture-retention ingredients. Efficacy ranking: petrolatum (~98% TEWL reduction) > beeswax/lanolin > cocoa butter > shea butter > dimethicone > oils. Best used as a final layer over humectants and emollients — occlusives seal in the work of the products underneath them.
True occlusives do not add moisture — they prevent its loss. Apply over damp skin or a humectant serum for maximum benefit. The PM routine as a system is: humectant serum (attract water) → emollient moisturiser (smooth and soften) → occlusive (seal everything in).
