Emollient

Smoothing Agent / Softening Ingredient

What It Is

An ingredient that softens and smooths the skin by filling in the gaps between skin cells in the stratum corneum, reducing roughness and restoring a smooth surface feel. Emollients work primarily in the stratum corneum, unlike occlusives which sit on top. They may also have occlusive secondary properties. Key emollients: plant oils (squalane, jojoba, rosehip), silicones (dimethicone, cyclomethicone), fatty alcohols (cetyl, stearyl alcohol), and shea butter. Essential for dry and rough-textured skin.

Key Context

Emollients are the "texture smoothers" — they make skin feel immediately silky and soft. They fill intercellular spaces but do not provide the robust TEWL-reducing occlusion of true occlusives like petrolatum.
