Petrolatum Occlusion / Overnight Moisturising Technique

What It Is

A skincare technique involving the application of a thin layer of an occlusive agent — traditionally petrolatum (Vaseline) but also substituted with thick balms or oils — as the absolute final step of a PM skincare routine. The occlusive layer dramatically reduces overnight transepidermal water loss (TEWL), creating a sealed environment that intensifies the moisturising effect of all underlying products. Originating from Korean and Filipino beauty traditions, popularised globally via TikTok circa 2021.

Key Context

Best for dry, dehydrated or barrier-compromised skin. Those with oily or acne-prone skin should approach with caution as occlusives can trap sebum and potentially worsen congestion. Not ideal for humid environments. Apply an extremely thin layer — just enough to create a slight sheen.
